The Desert Sun shills for Congresswoman Mary Mack

       Desert Observer's Page

In his September 7th Sunday column in
The Desert Sun, Executive Editor Rick Green wrote, "Is Bono Mack's last name really one of the most pressing issues before voters", and it's a fair question. The question probably has many answers, but the obvious one is no. However, the "Bono" name as a significant campaign boost, is a legitimate issue that needs to be addressed for what it represents.

First off, goodwill from the deceased Sonny Bono's name continues and his widow, since twice remarried, uses it for that reason - and there's definite political advantage in that. Sonny's widow has another new husband who's also a congressperson representing a district in Florida. With two districts, on separate coasts to represent, one has to believe the newly weds will spend less time in each. The congresswoman's new last name, Mack, which she chooses to use, reminds us she's no longer a full time resident in her own congressional district. It's the "Bono" name that provides the different and incorrect perspective about her residency status.

Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack has not yet begun to campaign and seems dependent on her party affiliation and the "Bono" name to pull off her reelection. Mack didn't have to do anything to win the Republican primary nomination and was mostly absent from the district during that time. The Democratic candidate, Julie Bornstein, has been out on the campaign trail, since March, addressing issues each day and before different audiences. So far this season her opponent has yet to put in similar appearances and speak to district needs and concerns.

It's my opinion the question asked of Democratic candidate Julie Bornstein by editor Rick Green, is the wrong one and it's addressed to the wrong person. He needs to be asking Republican candidate Mary Mack (or Bono Mack) when she's going to hit the campaign trail, meet with voters, answer questions, discuss "pressing issues" and pledge to make the district her full time residence? However, The Desert Sun is one committed to Congresswoman Mack and it's to be expected the questions that should be asked of her will not appear in the weekly Political Insider column nor on the newspaper editorial board's table when the time comes for their predictable endorsement of Mack as their choice for 45th Congressional District representative.
